A saw cut is a design line

Every slab is going to get cut anyway for control joints, so the question is whether those lines are placed to do a job or placed to look like they were meant to be there. Setting the pattern out properly turns a functional cut into the only detail a plain concrete driveway or entry actually has.

It works on new and existing concrete. On a new pour we can set the pattern out with the control joints so the two are the same lines. On an existing slab we cut the pattern in afterwards, which is a very cheap way to lift a tired driveway without replacing it.

Grids, diamonds, borders, banding around an entry, faux paving and detailed patterns are all just set out and a steady line. The cuts can be left as they are, filled, or coloured, depending on how much you want them to read.

Decorative cutting is the cheapest thing on this website that changes how a place looks. A Bendigo driveway, alfresco or front entry is usually a big plain grey area, and a set out grid or a border is the only detail it is ever going to get.

It works just as well on concrete that is already down. An older driveway that is tired but structurally sound can be cut instead of removed, at a fraction of the cost of pouring again. Most residential jobs are a day once the chalk lines are agreed.

The set out is the part worth taking time over. Done properly the pattern also does the work of the control joints, so the slab cracks along a line that was always meant to be there.

Can you cut a pattern into existing concrete?

Yes, and it is one of the better value jobs we do. A tired but structurally sound driveway can be transformed with a set out pattern for a fraction of the cost of removing it and pouring a new one.

Will the cuts weaken the slab?

Cut to a sensible depth, no. Decorative cuts are shallow compared to a structural cut, and where they are set out well they double as control joints, which actually helps the slab.

Can the cuts be coloured or filled?

Yes. They can be left as a clean saw line, filled with a joint sealant, or coloured to contrast with the slab. It depends how strongly you want the pattern to read.

Do you design the pattern?

We will cut to your design, or set one out with you on site. Most of the time it is a conversation with a chalk line before anything gets cut, because it is a lot easier to move a line than a cut.

Does it work on coloured or exposed concrete?

Yes. On coloured, exposed aggregate and burnished slabs a saw cut grid is often the only detail in the finish, so it is worth getting the set out right.

How long does a driveway take?

A typical residential driveway pattern is a day or less once the set out is agreed. The marking out usually takes longer than the cutting does.
