Deep cuts without the overcut
A ring saw drives its blade from the rim instead of the centre, so there is no arbor in the middle eating up half the diameter. That geometry is what lets a handheld machine reach 270mm, close to double a standard demolition saw, without becoming something that needs a track and a crew to set up.
The same geometry means it plunges. A conventional saw has to run off the end of a cut and overshoot it, which on a square opening leaves four overcuts in the concrete you are keeping. A ring saw drops in and stops on the line, so the corners come out clean and there is nothing to patch.
It is the saw for pipes, block work and precision work in places a machine cannot be bolted down. On the Hopetoun pool job it worked off planks over an empty shell alongside the hand saw, which is exactly the kind of job it exists for.

When the hand saw is not quite enough
Most ring saw work starts as a hand saw job that turned out to be deeper, tighter or fussier than it looked.
Square openings
Windows, vents and servery holes cut without overcutting the corners, so the concrete you are keeping stays intact.
Pipe cutting
Cutting concrete and clay pipe cleanly to length, in the trench, without cracking the length you want to keep.
Thicker block and brick
Double skin walls, filled cores and rendered block that a 150mm saw will not get through in one pass.

What is the difference between a ring saw and a hand saw?
Depth and corners. A hand saw cuts to 150mm and has to overrun the end of a cut. A ring saw drives the blade from the rim, so it reaches 270mm and it plunges, which means it stops on the line instead of overcutting past it.
Why does overcutting matter?
On a square opening, a saw that overruns leaves four cuts running out into the concrete you are keeping. Structurally that is not ideal and visually it has to be patched. A ring saw avoids the problem rather than making good afterwards.
Do you need both saws on site?
Usually we bring both. The hand saw is faster on everything within its depth and the ring saw picks up whatever is deeper or fussier. Same crew, same visit, no extra mobilisation.
Can a ring saw cut reinforced concrete?
Yes, it cuts straight through rebar. We scan first on anything structural so we know whether we are clipping bar or heading for a post tension tendon.
Is 270mm really the limit?
From one side, yes. If we can reach both faces of a wall we can cut from each side and effectively double it. Past that it becomes a wall saw job at 730mm, or a wire saw if it is thicker again.
Do you work on weekends around Bendigo?
