The cheapest part of the job, by a long way
A Hilti PS-1000 sends radar into the slab and maps what is in there. Reinforcing bar, post tension tendons, metal and plastic conduit, live cabling, water pipe and voids, down to 300mm. It gets marked on the surface so the cut or the core is set out around the things you cannot afford to hit.
The maths is not complicated. Scanning costs a fraction of a day rate. Cutting a post tension tendon means remediation and an engineer. Cutting a live cable means a shutdown, an electrician and an incident report. Cutting a charged water line in a finished building means everything underneath it gets wet.
It also finds what is missing. Voids under a slab, thin sections, and reinforcement that never went in where the drawings say it did. All of that changes how a job is priced and sequenced, and it is far better known before anybody has committed to it.

Concrete scanning in Echuca before anybody cuts
Scanning is the cheapest insurance available on a site. A PS-1000 pass costs a fraction of a day rate, and it is the only thing standing between a set out line and a post tension tendon, a live sub main or a charged water service.
Around Echuca and Moama a lot of it comes off older buildings. The port precinct, the pubs, the shops along the main street and the schools have all been altered several times over, and the drawings and the building parted company a long time ago. Nobody should be betting a structural slab on a plan drawn before the last three renovations.

Is concrete scanning the same thing as concrete X-ray?
People use the words interchangeably and this is what they mean. True X-ray needs access to both sides of the slab and a radiation exclusion zone. Ground penetrating radar like the PS-1000 works from one side with nobody cleared off the floor.
How deep can you scan?
To 300mm, which covers the overwhelming majority of slabs, walls and footings we are asked to cut into.
What can it actually find?
Reinforcing bar, post tension tendons, metal and plastic conduit, live cabling, pipework and voids. It all gets marked on the surface so the set out can be adjusted before anyone cuts.
Do I need it on a house slab?
Not always. On a plain residential slab with no services in the area we will tell you it is not worth the money. On post tension, structural, commercial or occupied work it is not really optional.
Can you scan without doing the cutting?
Yes. Plenty of the scanning work is for somebody else to cut, or for a builder deciding whether a job is feasible at all. We will scan it, mark it up and leave you with what is in there.
What happens if the scan finds a problem?
You hear about it before the blade goes in rather than after. Usually the fix is shifting the set out a couple of hundred millimetres. Occasionally it means an engineer needs to look at the opening, which is far better found on day one.
